MALAFEDE TRIO GUITAR ENG

toucheinside-r

With Touché, we open the first chapter of our musical adventure. We wanted to give our audience something intimate, an album that would represent each one of us without losing sight of the overall concept. After several months of meticulous work, we are presenting a project that we hope will share different realities, styles and sounds.
We like to think of it as a journey into our unconscious, where time and space become relative. We are happy with the result, but equally sure that, for many, Touché will be a surprise.

IF YOU BUY NOW I HAVE A BONUS FOR YOU:

If you will buy this album before 7th of december you will receive also 5 video lessons. In those lessons I will talk about some parts of the tunes you will find in the album. You already saw the first 2 lessons in streaming, if you will buy the album you will have the possibility to download all 5 videos to your computer and watch it any time you want.

WICH ARE THE TOPICS OF THE 5 LESSONS?

  1. Use of sweep picking combined with legato technique to get fast and smooth solo lines. In this lesson I take a look to a fast lick I played toward the end of the guitar solo in the titletrack ‘Touché’. When talkin about speed sweep picking is one of my favourite tools, I find very useful to play passages otherwise rather impossible. As opposed to the use of sweep in arpeggios involving 3- 4 (or more) strings, I take advantage of it in 2 strings passages in the middle of the phrase. So I’m not talking about long sweep sections easily recognisable even by ear, but a constant mix of sweep with alternate picking and especially legato.
This is just the case discussed in this lesson: a fast lick made of 32th notes triplet, developing on B Dorian scale in a 3 note per string pattern, with sweep and legato blending to create a flashy sound.
As I show you at the end of the video this idea can be applied on every 3 note per string fingering you know of any scale.
  2. A brief analysis of the rhythm part played on ‘Street Life’ Chorus, and tips on Funk Sound. In this lesson I take a deep look at the ‘Street Life’ chorus, Malafede Trio version. One of the most overlooked topics in many guitarists’ study schedule is getting proficient in rhythm guitar, whereas I consider it not only fascinating but also crucial, since generally in songs the time spent comping will be much more than the time dedicated to our solos.
Funk rhythm is very useful to improve our timing (working constantly with 16th notes patterns), our left hand pressure control and our right hand agility and authority.
In this video I show you into detail all the voicings used for the chorus chords, also involving chromatic passages and secondary dominants.
  3. Analysis of the guitar and bass unison, with special focus on legato use and left hand stretching. In this lesson I show you how to play the unison you can hear in ‘Fred, the classic Holdsworth tune, at the end of the guitar solo section.
This part in interesting in many ways. First of all you have to work on the left hand, opening your fingers quite a lot, as happens most of the times when studying Allan Holdsworth’s compositions and solos, and it ends up being a very effective exercise, also as a warm up when played at slower tempos.
The second thing to point out is the use of legato, also very typical of Allan’s style.
Lastly, the rhythmic aspect. Since this passage is played together with the bass in the solo climax, it has to be precise and groovy!
  4. Chord melody analysis in the B section of the theme. In this lesson I go back to rhythm playing. This time not focusing on groove like on ‘Street Life’, but taking a close look on the Chord Melody (that is mixing chords and melody, very common in jazz guitar) that you can hear in my composition ‘Il Mistero del Signor Piler’. Here I take as an example the B section of the main theme of the song.
When talking about left hand stretching we usually refer to how many frets we can reach horizontally. Not very often we talk about the importance of ‘Vertical Stretching’, that is the ability to keep your hand with some fingers extended while other are closed. This is often found in all the styles requiring a polyphonic use of guitar, like acoustic guitar or, like our case here, in jazz flavoured Chord Melody.
You have to strenghten your hand, to stay in demanding positions, but it’s also important to be relaxed as possible to play semibarré shapes.
  5. Analysis of the single note arrangement found in verse 1 and 2 of ‘Street Life‘. In this lesson I want to show you Federico’s arrangement of the two verses in this classic pop-jazz tune.
A distinctive element of this comping is that the verse is developed on a single note idea, sometimes  harmonizing the bass line.
Technically there are various interesting points: the single note funk sound here is obtained with abundant use of palm muting. Very important for the groove is the ability to control the note release, that is the right moment to stop the vibration of a certain note, because if we miss to do it correctly we end up with a rather dull groove. Also important is a good control of the upstroke picking motion. Almost all the phrases here end on the last 16th note of the beat, accents which I play with an upstroke to get a more dynamic sound, and I suggest you do not rotate your wrist while doing that.
